With 48 bells, Bournville Carillon ranks as one of the finest and largest instruments of its kind in Great Britain. George Cadbury commissioned the Carillon as a gift to the Cadbury workers in after a visit to Bruges, Belgium.

In twenty-four bells were added, together with a new bell frame, transmission and clavier to complete a carillon of thirty-five bells. Thirteen of these bells had previously been cast by Taylor’s between and for a mobile chime operated by David Potter, and had been tuned to match the “Nelson” chime at the time of their casting.

Bournville’s green environment reflected the aim of George Cadbury that one-tenth of the Estate should be 'laid out and used as parks, recreation grounds and open space.’ It attracted great interest from housing reformers, including the Garden City Association.

In fact George Cadbury was instrumental in developing the Garden City Movement. The British Carillon Society (BCS) was founded in to promote the art of the Carillon in the British Isles.

This is encouraged by regular meetings, the publication of a newsletter, musical selections, and co-operation with Carillon Societies in other countries.

The Charity exists to promote the Bournville Carillon and the memory of its founder George Cadbury who installed the rare instrument of 48 bells as a gift to the village in The 'Friends of Bournville Carillon' operate a Visitor Centre whereby members of the general public can find out more about the carillon and can book a visit to see.

Tours of the Carillon take place on Saturdays at 12 noon and 3pm and are free of charge, but donations are invited. Tours start from the Rest House (the Carillon’s visitor centre) on Bournville village green and booking in advanced is advised.

Carillon recitals at Bournville are usually played every Saturday at 12 noon and pm and visitors can be given a guided tour of the carillon as well as see the carillon being played by live video link from the clavier room to the visitor centre.
